What is UAE Student Visa?

A UAE student visa is a temporary residence permit granted to international students enrolled in approved universities in the United Arab Emirates. It allows students to live and study in UAE legally during their academic program. Student visas are typically issued for 1 year and are renewable annually.

To apply for a student visa, a student must first receive an offer of admission from a university in UAE. Most universities help students with visa application processing and offer in-house or partner support services.

A student visa usually includes:

  • An initial entry permit (granted before arrival)
  • Full visa stamping at the UAE immigration office
  • Mandatory medical insurance (either by the university or student-arranged)
  • Optional part-time work permits for postgraduate students

Types of Student Visas in UAE

UAE offers one primary student visa category for academic programs:


1. Full-Time University Student Visa:
This visa applies to students pursuing
  • Undergraduate degrees
  • Postgraduate degrees (Master’s, MBA, etc.)
  • Diploma or certificate programs

Students are required to be enrolled in a recognized UAE university. Visas are valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually for the duration of the course.

Some universities may provide part-time class options (evening/weekend) especially for postgraduate or working professionals.

Annual Intakes in UAE Universities

UAE universities offer multiple intake seasons to provide flexibility:

  • 1. September Intake: This is the main intake and includes a wide variety of courses across all universities.

  • 3. May Intake: Offered by select institutions such as the University of Wollongong, Canadian University UAE, and Murdoch University UAE.

Eligibility to Apply to UAE Universities for Studies

To study in UAE, students must meet the following basic eligibility requirements:

    For Undergraduate Programs:
  • Completed Class 12 or equivalent with
  • 50%–85% (based on board & university requirements)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (IELTS 6.0 or waiver if English score in 12th is 70%+)
  • No age restrictions
  • Academic gaps allowed with proper justifications
    For Postgraduate Programs:
  • Completed a recognized Bachelor's degree with
  • 50%–70% (based on program/university)
  • IELTS 6.5 or waiver (depending on UG English score)
  • Work experience may be required for MBA or executive programs

Each university may have specific cut-offs and course-specific criteria. Counseling is advised for best-fit options.

Documents Required for UAE Student Visas

Below is the list of documents typically needed for a UAE student visa application:

  • Completed visa application form
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months of validity
  • Passport-size color photograph with white background
  • Admission/offer letter from the university
  • Proof of tuition fee payment
  • Visa application fee receipt
  • Medical insurance coverage (provided by the university or independently arranged)
  • Contact details in UAE (if available)
  • Parent/guardian’s name and nationality details

Note: The visa is initially granted as an entry permit. Final student visa is issued after the student arrives in UAE.
